NFPA 1081 - Industrial Fire Brigade Member Professional Qualifications


UPDATE: ETC was recently informed by the Office of the Fire Commissioner that they will be consolidating the NFPA 1081 core and site examinations for Incipient Level, Advanced Exterior Level and Interior Structural Level. Effective January 1, 2015, there will be one examination for each of the three levels: Incipient, Advanced Exterior and Interior Structural.

Textbook: Jones and Bartlett Industrial Fire Brigade, Principles and Practice
Industrial employers can determine the training level for their brigade members. A company may customize their training through the ‘site specific’ options.

Note: Industrial fire brigade members who operate industrial fire brigade apparatus at any level of NFPA 1081 qualifications may be asked by the brigade management to meet the applicable requirements of NFPA 1002 before receiving the NFPA 1081 certification.

Successful students are eligible to apply for IFSAC and ProBoard certification. Application for ProBoard and IFSAC certificates can be downloaded from Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Incipient Level is designed to equip current and prospective brigade members with the basic knowledge of industrial firefighting. The course is divided into two disciplines - core competencies and site specific competencies. Both core and site specific competencies have theory and practical components. Core competencies take 16 hours to complete and site specific competencies can be completed in 13 hours.

Incipient core is a prerequisite for entry into the Advanced Exterior, Interior Structural and Brigade Leader courses. The course is directed at personnel that would deal with incidents at the incipient stage, and provides basic fire behaviour, extinguisher, hose, water supply, sprinkler systems, safety orientation, and salvage, overhaul and protecting evidence knowledge.

Evaluation: practical evaluation, proctored written exam

Advanced Exterior Level

Advanced Exterior Level is designed to give brigade members the knowledge and skills necessary for fighting exterior industrial fires including the use of PPE, SCBA, building search & rescue techniques, advanced exterior firefighting techniques and more. The course is divided into two disciplines-core competencies and site specific competencies. Both core and site specific have theory and practical components. Core competencies take 24 hours and site specific competencies can be completed in 30 hours.

Evaluation: practical evaluation, proctored written exam

Industrial Fire Brigade Leader Level is designed to give brigade members the knowledge and skills necessary to become brigade leaders. The course covers command structure and fireground organization; communications; and strategy and tactics. Brigade Leader Level takes 36 hours to complete including the theory and practical components.

Firefighters with NFPA 1001 Level II certification may challenge NFPA 1081 Incipient, Advanced Exterior and/or Interior Structural.
 
Written exams and practical skills evaluations for all three levels will be offered on each of the dates listed.
